MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – For the second consecutive year, redshirt senior Amy Cashin of the West Virginia University track and field team has been named the Big 12 Women's Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the conference announced on Friday.
Big 12 Spring Scholar-Athletes of the Year
Cashin, who also was honored with the award in 2017, becomes the league's first back-to-back recipient of the award for women's track and field. She's also one of two Mountaineer student-athletes to receive the honor in track and field, along with Kelly Williams (2016).
A native of Werribee, Victoria, Australia, Cashin has maintained a 4.0 grade-point average (GPA) while pursuing a master's degree in counseling. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in sport and exercise psychology with a double minor in psychology and athletic coaching in 2017.
Cashin earned her third career Academic All-District honor from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on May 29, advancing to the Google Cloud Academic All-America ballot. She was named an Academic All-America Second Team selection last year.
A three-time member of the Women's Track and Field Academic All-Big 12 First Team, Cashin earned WVU's most prestigious student honor, the Order of Augusta Award, in 2017. She's also a recipient of the 2017 Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award, the Big 12's highest academic honor, and has been featured on the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll, Big 12 Academic All-Rookie Team, Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll, President's List and Dean's List.
On Thursday night, Cashin placed 13th in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon, earning a school-record time of 9:58.75. The performance topped her previous WVU-best time of 9:59.40, which was set at the Penn Relays on April 26. For her efforts, Cashin was named to the All-America Second Team.
Cashin is the only Mountaineer female to ever break the 10-minute barrier in the steeplechase. She accomplished the feat twice during the 2018 season.
In all, Cashin is a three-time national qualifier, earning All-America Second Team honors for a ninth-place finish in the women's mile (4:43.67) at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Championships held in March, as well as All-America Third Team accolades for a 19th-place finish in the steeplechase (10:11.86) at the NCAA Outdoor Championships last season.
Cashin earned a silver medal in the steeplechase at the 2018 Big 12 Outdoor Championships, marking her seventh career All-Big 12 performance (indoor and outdoor) of her collegiate career. She's a three-time Big 12 runner-up in the steeplechase.
The Big 12 Conference established its Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award in 2012-13. A recipient is named in each conference-sponsored sport. Every Big 12 institution and affiliate members nominate one individual per sport with the winners selected by a vote of the league head coaches for that sport, who are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.
Scholar-Athlete of the Year nominees must be a junior or senior (academic standing), have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher, participate in at least 20 percent of the team's scheduled contests and have a minimum of one year in residence at the institution.
