MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team faced adverse weather conditions as the squad continued its spring season by competing against Oklahoma and Texas in the second annual Big 12 Double Duals at Lakewood Park in Norfolk, Virginia, on Saturday.

"Considering the lack of water time we've had not only this week, but this season, our crews did a great job of keeping the focus on what they can do and need to do well today," coach Jimmy King said, "We're behind where we normally expect to be at this time of year, but as we get more water time and with that, time to establish our line-ups, our rowing and our racing will certainly improve."
West Virginia opened competition with the varsity eight race, falling to the Longhorns, who posted a time of 6:46.41. The Mountaineers finished the race in 7:11.08.
Texas was then able to best WVU (7:27.69) in the second varsity eight race, as the Longhorns finished with a time of 6:52.70. Texas would then win the varsity four, second varsity four (due to a scratch by WVU) and third varsity eight races to end the first session of the day.
With the weather conditions worsening, WVU faced Oklahoma in the second session. Again, the varsity eight boats kicked off the racing. OU crossed the line at (6:35.74), ahead of the Mountaineers (6:53.13).
In the second varsity eight race, the Mountaineers fell to the Sooners, who crossed the finish line in 7:12.60, finishing 30 seconds ahead of WVU.
Due to the inclement weather and worsening racing conditions, the varsity four and third varsity eight races were cancelled to end the event.
"We were impressed by the hospitality and community support that we experienced in our first trip to the Norfolk area," King continued "Kudos not only to ODU Rowing, but to ODU Athletics as well for their great job of hosting this year's Big 12 duals."
Due to expected inclement weather in the Norfolk area, tomorrow's scheduled scrimmage against Old Dominion is cancelled. The Mountaineers will return to the water on Sunday, April 22, for the George Mason Invitational.
