MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team resumes its spring campaign on Sunday, April 22, at the second-annual George Mason Invitational.
Sunday's race will be held at the familiar Sandy Run Regional Park in Fairfax Station, Virginia. Fans attending the event are able to park for free at the Sandy Run Regional Park parking area. A free shuttle will be provided to the grandstand by the finish line.
A one-of-a-kind event, the George Mason Invite will pit three conferences against one another.
"Last year was the first George Mason Invite and we're excited to be invited back again this year," coach Jimmy King said. "The regatta is a great set-up with intra and inter-conference competition, letting us see how we stack up within the Big 12 and how the Big 12 compares to other conferences."
WVU will join Big 12 foes Kansas and Old Dominion. Eastern Michigan, Delaware and Villanova will represent the Colonial Athletic Conference, while host George Mason, George Washington and St. Joseph's will compete for the Atlantic 10.
"Coach (Ted) Nagorsen and the staff at George Mason did an excellent job running a really enjoyable regatta last year and we are looking forward to another great weekend of racing," King continued. "Going into the George Mason Invite this year, we're looking at it as a chance to make a last statement of our speed compared to other Big 12 teams before the championship."
In the morning session of Sunday's event, the conference opponents will face one another to determine who will race in the A, B and C Finals in the afternoon session.
Again, the Mountaineers will have five crews rowing on Sunday. The first varsity eight, second varsity eight, first varsity four, second varsity four and third varsity eight boats will all be racing. However, points will only be scored in three events, the first varsity eight, second varsity eight and first varsity four.
The top finisher in each event will move on to the A final, while second place will compete in the B final and third in the C final.
In the afternoon session, the winner of the varsity eight final will receive nine points for their conference, the second-place finisher will get six points and third-place will collect three points. The second varsity eight boats will score with a 6-4-2 format and the varsity four will use a 3-2-1 scoring system.
The A, B and C Finals will use the same format of scoring in each of the three competitions.
The conference that has obtained the most points through all nine finals competitions at the end of the event will be named the George Mason Invitational Champions.
