April 27, 2018 03:21 PM | Rowing
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team will wrap up its regular season by traveling to Philadelphia to take on Saint Joseph's and Delaware on April 28.
Saturday's race will take place on the Schuylkill River, with all boats launching from the Gillin Boathouse of Saint Joe's.
WVU will face host Saint Joe's in the first racing session on Saturday. The Mountaineers and the Hawks will each have four crews competing. The third varsity boats will open the event, when they launch at 10 a.m. The varsity four crew will launch at 10:20, with the second varsity eight, and varsity eight boats following in 20 minute intervals.
The Mountaineers will then take a short break before facing Delaware. Again, WVU will have the third varsity eight, varsity four, second varsity eight, and varsity eight boats racing.
Afternoon racing is slated to begin at 1:10 p.m., with the next three events starting every 20 minutes. The varsity eight crew will close the event for WVU, with racing set for 2:10 p.m.
"Delaware and St. Joe's competed at the GMU Invite last weekend where we raced some of their crews in the afternoon finals, so we have an idea of their speed," coach Jimmy King said. "While those race experiences with their crews are helpful going into this weekend, the primary focus for all of our crews needs to remain on 'keeping it internal' as we like to say."
The Mountaineers enter Saturday's contest after winning two event finals last Sunday to help the Big 12 secure its second straight win at the George Mason Invitational in Fairfax Station, Virginia.
