MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt senior Amy Cashin of the West Virginia University track and field team broke her own school record in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2018 Penn Relays, at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Thursday night.
Results
Cashin won the race, earning a personal-best time of 9:59.40. With the performance, she became the first Mountaineer to ever break the 10-minute barrier in the event. The Werribee, Victoria, Australia, native topped her previous WVU-best time of 10:01.19 from 2017.
The performance also was good for the fourth-best women's 3,000-meter steeplechase time in Penn Relays history.
"We're so proud of what Amy did tonight," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "She ran a perfectly-executed race that resulted in one of the fastest finishes that she has ever delivered. For this to be Amy's first steeple of the year, in such an incredible stadium, in front of an incredible crowd, was sensational. Hopefully, we will see Amy progress from this point through the NCAA Championships."
Cashin became the Mountaineers' first winner in the event at the Penn Relays since Sarah Martinelli in 2014 (10:17.47).
Cashin was joined by redshirt senior Maggie Drazba and redshirt freshman Sarah Wills at the meet on Thursday. Drazba placed 31st in the women's 5,000 meters in 17:05.26, while Wills took 36th place in the event in 17:12.86.
Thursday marked the first time WVU has competed at the Penn Relays since 2016. The meet, which is the oldest track and field competition in the country, has been hosted by Penn every year since 1895. It's also is one of the biggest meets in the United States, with over 200 colleges participating this season.
Next up, the Mountaineers will make the trip to Charlottesville, Virginia, for the second consecutive weekend to compete in the Virginia Grand Prix on Saturday, April 28. WVU traveled to Virginia's Lannigan Field for the Virginia Challenge from April 20-21.
