Gardner Smashes School Record at Virginia Challenge

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt junior Madelin Gardner shattered her own school record in the women's pole vault as the West Virginia University track and field team opened competition at the Virginia Challenge, in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Friday.
Results
Gardner earned a personal-best mark of 4.41 meters (14 feet, 5.50 inches) in the women's pole vault invitational, smashing her former WVU-best jump of 4.13 meters from 2017. The Williamstown, West Virginia, native also bested the previous facility and meet records in the event. She finished in second place.
Gardner cleared marks of 3.86, 4.01, 4.11, 4.21 and 4.31 meters before her final successful jump of 4.41 meters.
In all, the Mountaineers combined to earn five top-10 finishes on the first of the two-day meet at Virginia's Lannigan Field.
Along with Madelin Gardner's performance, freshman Ellie Gardner tied for second place in the women's pole vault (unseeded) with a jump of 3.71 meters (12 feet, 2 inches). Senior Rebekah Lafata took 12th place in the event with a mark of 3.26 meters (10 feet, 8.25 inches).
In the women's triple jump invitational, junior Danique Bryan placed fifth with a mark of 12.58 meters (41 feet, 3.25 inches), while freshman McKenna Smith earned a ninth-place finish in the women's 400 meters invitational, crossing the finish line in 55.89.
A pair of Mountaineers also competed in the women's 10,000 meters, as redshirt senior Jillian Forsey finished in eighth place in her 2017-18 season debut. Forsey tallied a time of 35:21.96 in the event, ahead of freshman Bree Warren, who took 18th place in 36:20.05.
Additionally, redshirt senior Meghan Jean-Baptiste participated in the first four events of the heptathlon on Friday. The Fairfax, Virginia, native finished third in the 100-meter hurdles (14.76), fourth in the 200 meters (25.84), fifth in the high jump (1.62 meters – 5 feet, 3.75 inches) and 10th in the shot put (9.44 meters – 30 feet, 11.75 inches).
Jean-Baptiste earned 2,937 points on the day, good for sixth place in the overall competition, with three events scheduled for Saturday.
The Mountaineers are joined by over 50 schools at the Virginia Challenge this weekend, including No. 15 Tennessee, No. 23 Miami (Fla.), Georgetown, Maryland, Michigan State, Navy, NC State, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Penn State, Pitt, Syracuse, Temple, Wake Forest and others.
Competition concludes on Saturday, with events set to begin at 10:30 a.m. ET. Live stats are available at flashresults.com. ACC Network Extra also will provide a live stream of the meet at espn.com/watch beginning at 7 p.m.
