MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team will conclude its regular season this weekend with a pair of matches against No. 13 Texas Tech on Friday, April 20, and TCU on Sunday, April 22.
Weather depending, both matches will take place at the Mountaineer Tennis Courts. In case of inclement weather, the matches will be moved indoors to the Summit Tennis Academy. Friday's match will begin at 5 p.m., while Sunday's contest is set for 11 a.m.
Free pizza and WVU Tennis posters will be available to all fans attending the match on Friday. Fans also are encouraged to stay after the match for an autograph signing with the team.
On Sunday, WVU will honor its seniors, Lyn Yuen Choo and Yvon Martinez, as it takes on TCU. All fans in attendance will be able to get free bagels and WVU tennis posters. Fans are encouraged to be in their seats 10 minutes prior to the match to help recognize the seniors for their outstanding accomplishments.
"Just like anyone in the Big 12, they are tough," fifth-year coach Miha Lisac said. "Texas Tech is one of the best teams in the Big 12 and one of the best teams in the nation, so we are always excited to have an opportunity to challenge ourselves against that level of competition."
The Lady Raiders enter the match with a 16-5 mark on the season, including a 5-2 record in Big 12 play. Last weekend, Texas Tech won a pair of matches in a road swing through Oklahoma, defeating Oklahoma (4-3) and No. 11 Oklahoma State (4-1).
Sabrina Federici tops the Lady Raiders in singles wins, tallying 14 on the season. TTU also boasts four players ranked inside the latest Oracle/ITA singles rankings. No. 20 Gabriela Talaba tops the list, with No. 54 Felicity Maltby, No. 103 Sarah Dvorak and No. 120 Reagan Collins following.
In doubles play, Talaba and Maltby pace Texas Tech with 18 wins and boast a No. 88 ranking. The tandem of Collins and Dvorak also are ranked No. 18 in the country.
Choo currently sits at No. 14 in school history with 114 career wins in both singles and doubles play, and is tied for No. 15 in singles wins in her career. Despite sitting out the majority of her senior season due to a knee injury, Martinez has amassed 58 career wins.
"They were among the first two recruits that I brought here when I came to West Virginia, so it is the first round of graduates that we have recruited to the team," Lisac said. "They have meant everything to the building of the team. They were the first building blocks of the team that we have today, and they have contributed tremendously on and off the court."
TCU begins the weekend with a 10-13 (0-7 Big 12) record after defeating Texas State, 4-1, on Tuesday. Marie Norris leads the Horned Frogs with a 12-5 singles record this season, while senior Aleksandra Zenovka is ranked No. 122 in the Oracle/ITA singles rankings. The doubles tandem of Stevie Kennedy and Norris top TCU with six wins in doubles play this spring.
"TCU on Sunday will be a very interesting match," Lisac said. "TCU is a very talented team. We know they will be ready to come in and play."
