Morgantown, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's tennis team continued Big 12 play in Texas Sunday afternoon, falling to No. 5 Texas, 4-0, at the Texas Tennis Center, in Austin.
"Credit UT, they competed extremely well today," fifth-year coach Miha Lisac said. "They are a tough team, and they are well-deserved champions of the Big 12 regular season."
WVU (7-11, 1-56 Big 12) started Sunday's contest by dropping the doubles point, as UT took two of the three matches for an early 1-0 lead. On the first court, Christina Jordan and Sofia Duran fell to No. 45 Petra Granic and Bojana Markovic. The Longhorns then claimed the doubles point when their tandem of Anna and Bianca Turati defeated Giovanna Caputo and Anne-Sophie Courteau, 6-2, at No. 3.
Of note, the third doubles match between Lyn Yuen Choo and Paula Goetz and Marta Perez-Mur and Dani Wagland was abandoned due to clinch rules.
The Longhorns would then win the first three singles matches, winning the contest by a score of 4-0. At No. 3, Choo fell to No. 75 Granic, 6-0, in straight sets. Jordan then dropped the decision to No. 1 Bianca Turati, 6-0 and 6-0, on the first court, as the Longhorns took a commanding 3-0 lead over the Mountaineers.
No. 27 Anna Turati clinched the match for Texas, defeating Courteau, 6-0 and 6-2, on the second court to give the Longhorns the 4-0 win.
The matches at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 also were abandoned due to clinch rules.
Up next, WVU will conclude the regular season at home with a pair of matches against No. 13 Texas Tech on Friday, April 20, and TCU on Sunday, April 22. Friday's match is slated to begin at 5 p.m., while first serve for Sunday's contest is set for 11 a.m. Weather depending, both matches will be held at the Mountaineer Tennis Courts.
