Carter's 24 Leads No. 21 WVU to Win No. 21

Box Score MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Jevon Carter scored 24 points and Esa Ahmad added 18 points and a career-high 11 rebounds to lead 21st-ranked West Virginia to an 85-70 victory over undermanned Iowa State here tonight at the WVU Coliseum.

Carter got his 24 on 9 of 17 from the floor and 5 of 7 from the free throw line while Ahmad made 7 of 12 from the floor, including 2 of 3 from 3.

"We won," said West Virginia coach Bob Huggins, his 250th at WVU and the 840th for his coaching career.

Iowa State, playing with just seven players, got 29 points from freshman guard Lindell Wigginton and 12 from Terrence Lewis. The Cyclones were playing tonight's game with their second-leading scorer Donovan Jackson who was home in Milwaukee to attend his father's funeral.

"Wigginton is really good," Huggins said. "(Coach) Steve (Prohm) does a great job and they run great sets."

The game was tied at 28 with 3:39 left in the first half when West Virginia (21-8, 10-6) used an 11-2 run to finish the half with a 39-20 lead.

The Mountaineers limited Iowa State (13-15, 4-12) to just 3 of 18 from the floor during a 13-minute stretch between the first and second halves to take control of the game.

Guard Daxter Miles Jr. and forward Sagaba Konate contributed 14 points each, Miles hitting 6 of 6 from the free throw line and Konate adding six more blocks to his team-leading total of 97.

Carter had two assists tonight to become the first player from a Power 5 conference to ever score more than 1,500 points, grab 500 rebounds, hand out 500 assists and make 300 steals for his career. Carter now shows career totals of 1,612 points, 510 rebounds, 501 assists and 303 steals and he moves past Truck Bryant into 14th place in career scoring at WVU.

Ahmad has his second career double-double and Miles' 14 moved him past Marcus Goree into 29th place in career scoring with 1,189 points.

"We need (Ahmad) to play well, we need Sags to play well, we need the two seniors to play well and we need Beetle (Bolden) to come off the bench and do what he's been doing," Huggins said. "The way we play it has to be a team effort."

Neither team shot the ball particularly well tonight, West Virginia connecting on 45.5 percent of its field goal attempts and Iowa State 42.9 percent.

The Mountaineers (21-8, 10-6) dominated the glass, 47-27, and they continue to swizzle from the free throw line, hitting 20 of 23. WVU came into tonight's game as the best free throw shooting team in the Big 12 making 76.8 percent of its attempts.

Forward Jeff Bevery scored 11 on 5 of 7 shooting for the Cyclones, who are now winless in eight conference road games this season.

A crowd of 14,205 watched tonight's game. The win against Iowa State was the Mountaineers' fifth in their last seven games.

West Virginia's victory and Texas Tech's loss to Kansas today moves the Mountaineers and Red Raiders into a second-place tie with 10-6 records.

The Jayhawks have won at least a share of their 14th straight Big 12 regular season championship with two games left against Texas and Oklahoma State.

West Virginia and Texas Tech will play Monday night in Morgantown at 9 p.m. It will be the final WVU Coliseum appearance for seniors Carter and Miles Jr.
