
Mountaineers Finish Opening Night of Big 12 Indoors

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team began competition at the 2018 Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championship, at the Lied Recreation Athletic Facility, in Ames, Iowa, on Friday.

The Mountaineers earned a fourth-place finish in the women's distance medley relay, as the team of redshirt freshman Sarah Wills, freshman McKenna Smith, redshirt sophomore Candace Jones and redshirt senior Amy Cashin crossed the finish line in 11:28.20.
WVU also saw six participants compete in event finals on the opening night of the two-day championship meet.
Redshirt senior Meghan Jean-Baptiste opened the meet for WVU in the women's pentathlon. She earned a 10th-place finish in the event, earning 3,445 points. Jean-Baptiste finished fifth in the long jump event, earning a mark of 5.64 meters (18 feet, 6 inches). She also placed sixth in the high jump with a mark of 1.64 meters (5 feet, 4.5 inches).
Later on, WVU saw senior Sara Finfrock place 10th in the women's pole vault, earning a mark of 3.84 meters (12 feet, 7.25 inches). Freshman Ellie Gardner also cleared 3.84 meters, finishing in 11th due to a judge's decision.
From there, redshirt senior Maggie Drazba took 13th place in the women's 5,000 meters. Drazba finished in 17:12.34.
Saturday's events are set to begin at noon ET, featuring track-event finals, as well as the high jump, shot put and triple jump.
