AUSTIN, Texas – Thirty members of the West Virginia University swimming and diving teams have been named to the 2018 Academic All-Big 12 Swimming and Diving Team, the conference announced on Tuesday.
Academic All-Big 12 Team

Morgan Carr, Sam Hall and Emma Harris were recognized on the second team.
For the WVU men, 14 student-athletes were recognized, including first-team selections Drew Damich, Luke Hene, Ryan Kelly, James Koval, Matthew Marsh, Chris McMahon, Adam Poe, Jack Portmann, Jake Preaskorn, Michael Proietto and Drew Riebel.
Mariano Adame, Jack Frazier and Austin Smith were named to the Academic All-Big 12 Second Team.
"At the end of the day, we're here to get an education," WVU coach Vic Riggs said. "It's my job to help them swim faster, and it's also my job to make sure they're taking care of what they need to be doing academically. It's a big part of our program. What I do know is kids that perform well academically, perform well in the pool. That's why we try so hard to make it happen."
A total of 130 Big 12 student-athletes were recognized on the Academic All-Big 12 Swimming and Diving Team.
The first team consists of those who have maintained a 3.20 grade point average or higher, while second-team honorees hold a GPA of 3.00-3.19.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
