
Mountaineers Hold Steady in Regional Rankings

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Shamoya McNeil and redshirt junior Madelin Gardner lead the West Virginia University track and field team in this week's Mid-Atlantic Regional event rankings, presented by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Regional Event Rankings (Feb. 12, 2018)
Gardner sits atop the region in the women's pole vault, while McNeil ranks No. 1 in the women's triple jump. In all, eight Mountaineers are featured in this week's regional rankings.
The program's indoor school-record holder in the pole vault, Gardner earned a mark of 4.37 meters (14 feet, 4 inches) at the Akron Invitational, on Feb. 3, in Akron, Ohio. The mark also is good for No. 8 nationally.
Last week, the Williamstown, West Virginia, native recorded a mark of 4.25 meters (13 feet, 11.25 inches) at the Marshall Invitational, on Feb. 9, in Huntington, West Virginia, breaking the facility record in the process.
McNeil's mark of 12.82 meters (42 feet, 0.75 inches) also remains at the top of the regional rankings this week. The Portland, Jamaica, native earned the mark at the Akron Invitational.
WVU features three student-athletes who rank in the Mid-Atlantic Regional's top eight in multiple events. Redshirt senior Amy Cashin sits second in the women's 3,000 meters after recording a career-best time of 9:11.24 at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, on Feb. 9, in Boston, Massachusetts. The time is the second-best in program history in the event, ahead of two-time NCAA runner-up Marie-Louise Asselin (9:14.44) and Olympian Jess O'Connell (9:14.12), and behind only former nine-time All-American and Olympian Megan Metcalfe (8:58.17).
Cashin also ranks fourth in the women's mile with her time of 4:41.17 from the Penn State National Open, on Jan. 27, in University Park, Pennsylvania.
Redshirt senior Maggie Drazba sits fourth in the women's 5,000 meters and fifth in the women's 3,000 meters. She earned a time of 16:34.48 in the 5,000 at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, while finishing the 3,000 in 9:27.37 at the Penn State National Open.
Junior Danique Bryan sits just behind McNeil in the women's triple jump, showcasing a mark of 12.36 meters (40 feet, 6.75 inches) from the Penn State National Open. Bryan also ranks eighth in the women's long jump with a mark of 5.73 meters (18 feet, 9.75 inches) from the Akron Invitational.
Additionally, senior Sara Finfrock ranks fourth in the women's pole vault after earning an indoor career-best mark of 4.05 meters (13 feet, 3.5 inches) at the Marshall Invitational. Gardner and Finfrock are two of four Mountaineers ranked regionally in the pole vault.
In the team rankings, WVU continues to sit sixth in the Mid-Atlantic Regional this week.
The Mountaineers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Penn State Tune-Up, in University Park, Pennsylvania. The trip marks WVU's second visit to Penn State during the 2017-18 indoor campaign.
