MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team plays host to No. 3 Kentucky on Sunday, Feb. 11, at 10 a.m., at the new Bill McKenzie Rifle Range inside the WVU Shell Building.
The match is free and open to the public. The teams will shoot one smallbore relay and one air rifle, and competition should conclude before 3 p.m.
Sunday's match carries extra importance, as the winner will claim the Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) regular-season title. The Mountaineers (12-0, 8-0 GARC) have won the last four championships and 10 overall. The Wildcats (7-0, 6-0 GARC) have claimed six crowns.
"We are excited to shoot against Kentucky. They are a competitive team, and this is always a good match," Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond said. "They have an exceptional shooter this year in Henrick Larsen from Norway, and he will present a great challenge for our team.
"The majority of our focus tomorrow will be shooting for the first time at the Bill McKenzie Rifle Range. We're excited. I think this will be a great way to showcase our sport and witness all the hard work that has been put in by so many people to bring this range to life. We're anticipating a great fan experience, and we encourage everyone to come out Sunday and watch this team compete."
The Mountaineers sit atop the College Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) Rankings with a 4737 NCAA Selection season average. The mark is comprised of the team's top three scores shot at three different venues. The Wildcats sit two places behind the Mountaineers with a 4713.33 selection average.
WVU is 18-9 all-time against UK. In their last meeting, the Mountaineers tallied a 4718-4675 victory in Lexington, Kentucky, on Feb. 11, 2017, to claim the GARC regular-season title.
Two weeks have passed since the Mountaineers' last outing, a 4733-4656 win over Navy on Jan. 26 at the WVU Rifle Range. Sophomore Morgan Phillips shot a career-high 592 smallbore for the individual win, and junior Ginny Thrasher claimed the air rifle victory with a 597 score.
The Mountaineers show season averages of 2382.5 air rifle and 2342.5 smallbore. Thrasher paces the Mountaineers in both disciplines with averages of 597.3 air rifle and 587.3 smallbore.
The Wildcats are coming off a 4650-4599 victory over Memphis on Jan. 27, at the Buell Armory and Barker Hall in Lexington. North Georgia also competed and shot a 4599 mark. Freshman Hailee Sigmon won air rifle with a career-high 596 mark, and junior Cathryn Papasodora finished first in smallbore with a season-high matching 583.
