West Virginia, currently ranked No. 25 in the USA Today Sports Coaches Preseason Poll, and Coppin State meet for the sixth straight season, a streak that dates back to Dec. 3, 2013. It will be the 11th meeting overall between the two in a series that started in November 1999. WVU holds a 10-0 lead in the series, including a 101-43 win at the Coliseum last December.
Coming off a 25-win campaign last season, the Mountaineers picked up an 88-53 exhibition win over West Liberty last week behind 18 points from senior guard/forward Naomi Davenport. Redshirt junior guard Tynice Martin made her return to the court after missing the 2017-18 season due to injury. A trio of freshmen also made their WVU debuts, as forward Kari Niblack and guard Madisen Smith each came away with nine points while forward Jala Jordan added a pair of field goals as well.
"I like our freshmen," coach Mike Carey said. "To be honest with you, I like our freshmen. I think they have a chance to be really good. With that being said, they're still freshmen. They have a chance to be good, but they're going to have to grow up really fast."
Coppin State, who went 6-23 overall last season, earned an 84-80 win over LIU Post in exhibition play on Oct. 27. Senior transfer Brooke Fields had a team-best 29 points, while returner Chance Graham added 21 for the Eagles.
Of note, WVU has won four straight season openers, taking wins over Eastern Kentucky (2014-15), Delaware State (2015-16), Charleston Southern (2016-17) and Central Connecticut State (2017-18). WVU's last loss on opening day came on Nov. 8, 2013, when the team dropped a 70-61 contest to Ohio State. Additionally, West Virginia is 14-3 in season openers under the direction of Carey.
