MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University novice rowing team travels to Fairfax Station, Virginia, this weekend to compete in the 34th Annual Head of the Occoquan on Saturday.
The Head of the Occoquan is hosted by the Occoquan Boat Club and will be held at the Occoquan Reservoir. The regatta marks the first intercollegiate competition for 22 Mountaineer student-athletes, who were named to the novice squad on Sept. 13.
"This is the first race for the novice squad. So, everyone is really excited," said assistant coach Tina Griffith. "The girls have been very competitive with one another on the water recently, and we are looking forward to seeing how that competitiveness plays out this weekend."
The Mountaineers begin with three boats competing in the Women's Collegiate Novice 4+ event. The boats are slated to launch at 11:50 a.m. ET. Following the Novice 4+ event, two WVU boats will then compete in the Women's Collegiate Novice 8+ race, scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. ET.
In last year's regatta, WVU secured a victory in the novice 8+ race and picked up top-10 finishes in the novice 4+ race. In the novice 4+ race, the Mountaineers' 'A' and 'C' claimed fourth (22:54.31) and fifth place (23:13.95).
West Virginia will wrap up the fall season on Friday, Nov. 9, when they host Duquesne in Morgantown for a team scrimmage on the Monongahela River. The race marks the second meeting between the Dukes and Mountaineers this fall. The varsity team last competed on Saturday, Oct. 27, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when they raced in the Head of the Schuylkill regatta.
A full recap of Saturday's action will be available on WVUsports.com.
