MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men's and women's soccer teams have once again been recognized with the Team Academic Award by the United Soccer Coaches, in honor of their outstanding performance in the classroom during the 2017-18 academic year.
This marks the 17th consecutive year that the women have been recognized and the 11th year in a row that the men have received the award.
The WVU women earned a 3.38 grade point average, while the men recorded a 3.14. The men are one of four Mid-American Conference teams honored, and the women one of four from the Big 12.
"I am proud of our team's academic achievement, and their desire to continue to have success in the classroom," men's coach Marlon LeBlanc said. "Year in and year out, our program is held to the highest standard for academic achievement. Our student-athletes strive for excellence in the classroom and on the field, and I'm grateful for that commitment. Thank you to our academic support team for their continued support and congratulations to our team for their accomplishments."
"This team holds itself to a high academic standard," women's coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "Each day, these student-athletes make sure they're getting their jobs done on the field and in the classroom, and I'm very proud of them and their hard work. This is definitely an honor we hold in high regard, and we hope to win it each season."
West Virginia is one of 191 schools to have both its men's and women's programs honored for earning a 3.0 GPA or higher last year. A total of 773 programs were recognized, 289 men's squads and 484 women's.
