January 31, 2018 02:51 PM | Track & Field
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University Director of Athletics Shane Lyons unveiled the 2018 outdoor track and field schedule on Wednesday.
SCHEDULE
The schedule features seven regular-season meets, along with the Big 12, NCAA East Regional and NCAA Championships at the conclusion of the campaign.
"Once we get off the indoor tracks, we'll head to North Carolina for two meets in March, while a couple of distance runners head out to Stanford to try to get regional qualification," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "Then, it just follows a series of meets that will allow us to really get prepared for the end of the season. We've set the schedule up in such a way that we've given opportunities to all of the athletes to have the best chance possible to qualify for the NCAA Championships."
The Mountaineers open the outdoor season with a trip to the 49er Classic in Charlotte, North Carolina, from March 15-17. The team will make a return trip to the Tar Heel State two weeks later at N.C. State's Raleigh Relays, from March 30-31, in Raleigh.
A group of Mountaineers will also travel to the West Coast from March 30-31, to compete in the Stanford Invitational in Stanford, California.
On April 13-14, the team will compete at Bucknell University's Bison Outdoor Classic in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. From there, the Mountaineers will make back-to-back trips to Charlottesville, Virginia. First, WVU is set to compete in the Virginia Challenge from April 20-21, before returning a week later for the Virginia Grand Prix on April 28.
WVU wraps up its regular-season slate on May 4, at Indiana University's Billy Hayes Invitational, in Bloomington, Indiana.
Baylor will serve host to the 2018 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championship in Waco, Texas, from May 11-13.
The NCAA East Preliminary Regionals takes place from May 24-27, in Tampa, Florida, while the season concludes with the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, at Hayward Field, in Eugene, Oregon, from June 7-10.
The Mountaineers return five regional qualifiers from a year ago, including redshirt senior Amy Cashin (3,000-meter steeplechase) and senior Shamoya McNeil (triple jump), who went on to compete at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
This year, WVU welcomes eight newcomers to the team, while 21 upperclassmen return for the 2018 outdoor campaign.
WVU continues its 2017-18 indoor season with a trip to Akron, Ohio, to compete in the Akron Invitational from Feb. 2-3. Friday's events are set to begin at 4 p.m. ET, while Saturday's action will begin at 10 a.m.
