MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team plays host to Navy in a Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) match on Friday, Jan. 26, at 9 a.m., at the WVU Rifle Range.
The WVU Rifle Range is located inside the WVU Shell Building behind the WVU Coliseum. Fans are encouraged to stop by the range throughout the day, and admission is free.
Originally scheduled to take place in Annapolis, Maryland, on Jan. 27, the match was moved to Morgantown due to a scheduling conflict.
WVU is 26-8 all-time against the Midshipmen (3-3, 2-3 GARC). In their last meeting, the Mountaineers earned a 4725-4651 victory on Jan. 20, 2017, at the WVU Rifle Range.
The Mountaineers' (11-0, 7-0 GARC) bonus home match follows the team's extended trip to Fairbanks, Alaska, last weekend. WVU returned to Morgantown with 4718-4669 and 4719-4704 victories over No. 9 Mississippi and No. 5 Alaska-Fairbanks, respectively.
"There's a comfort factor competing at home, and getting the extra rest with less travel time will benefit everyone," Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond said. "The quick turnaround after our week in Alaska is useful, too, and will help us as we continue to prepare for the postseason."
Junior Ginny Thrasher paces the Mountaineers in smallbore and air rifle with season averages of 587.4 and 597.3. Last week, the Springfield, Virginia, native earned three of the four individual victories, including a near-perfect 599 air rifle win against Ole Miss.
Sophomore Milica Babic won air rifle against the Nanooks with a 598 total. Also against UAF, redshirt-freshman Noah Barker notched two career highs, including an eighth place, 590 showing in air rifle.
Five Mountaineers counted toward the team totals last week: Thrasher, Babic, senior Elizabeth Gratz, sophomore Morgan Phillips and freshman Sarah Osborn.
Navy is coached by Olympic Silver medalist and WVU Sports Hall of Fame honoree Mike Anti, the father of current WVU junior Will Anti.
"Friday is a very unique situation for Mike and Will," Hammond added. "There is a great family history within the sport. We used to see Mike when he coached at Air Force, too. Since Navy is a member of the GARC, it will be nice for us to see a familiar face more often. I'm sure they'll both embrace this opportunity Friday."
Navy went 1-1 in Annapolis last week, falling 4682-4655 to Nebraska on Jan. 19 before defeating NC State, 4683-4678, on Jan. 21.
