MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team travels to Fairbanks, Alaska, this weekend for a pair of top-10 matches at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks' E.F. Horton Rifle Range.
The Mountaineers (9-0, 6-0 GARC) line up against No. 9 Mississippi (4-3, 4-2 GARC) on Saturday, Jan. 20, at 1 p.m. EST, and the No. 5-ranked Nanooks (9-0, 6-0 PRC) on Sunday, Jan. 21, at noon EST.

"Any road trip is always a great chance for the team to test itself in a new venue," Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond said. "This should be a fun trip, too. We're traveling a long distance, and Alaska isn't a place you get to visit every day. The team is excited."
The Mountaineers look to go 2-0 against the Rebels this season, as they defeated Ole Miss, 4739-4647, on Oct. 21, at the WVU Rifle Range. WVU shot an NCAA-record 2329 air rifle in the victory.
WVU is 13-3 all-time against Ole Miss, a Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) foe.
Sunday's match pits the two most-decorated teams in NCAA rifle history, as the Mountaineers have won 19 National Championships and the Nanooks have won 10. Alaska-Fairbanks earned its last NCAA title in 2008. Since that victory, WVU has claimed six championships, including the last five.
In their last meeting, the Mountaineers earned a 4717-4688 victory over the Nanooks at the WVU Rifle Range on Jan. 10, 2017.
The Mountaineers are 12-7 all-time against Alaska-Fairbanks.
"Overall, we just want to continue to build on our lessons from last week," Hammond added. "These should be two tough matches, and back-to-back matches will give us a good challenge. We'll see where we're at this weekend and where we need to improve."
WVU opened its spring season with a commanding 4711-4651 victory over Akron on Jan. 14, at the WVU Rifle Range. The Mountaineers swept the Zips, winning smallbore, 2334-2296, and air rifle, 2377-2355. Junior Ginny Thrasher shot 598 and finished first in air rifle, and redshirt-freshman David Koenders won smallbore with a 586 mark.
Thrasher paces the Mountaineers with season averages of 586.6 smallbore and 597.3 air rifle.
Ole Miss and Alaska-Fairbanks compete today in a shoulder-to-shoulder match.
