MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University swimming and diving teams opened the 2017-18 season with the Mountaineers' annual Gold-Blue Meet on Saturday, Sept. 30, at the WVU Natatorium.
For the first time in three years, the Blue team defeated the Gold team in the 12-event, mixed intrasquad meet, winning 164-143.
"I thought the energy was great," WVU coach Vic Riggs said. "The teams swam well for their first meet. We definitely have some areas we need to work on, but it's early in the season and I thought it was a great start for the teams."
Junior Morgan Carr and sophomore Julia Nilton led the Blue team with three wins apiece, including two individual victories. Redshirt junior Tristen DiSibio, junior Merwane El Merini and sophomore Julia Miranda each added two more wins for the victors.
Senior Amelie Currat and sophomore Luke Hene also helped the Blue team's cause with individual wins.
The Gold squad was led by redshirt senior Nate Carr, who secured three total wins, two of them in individual events. Junior Emma Harris, sophomore Ryan Kelly and freshman David Dixon also chipped in with two wins.
The Mountaineer divers participated in mixed synchronized events, pairing teammates together on 1- and 3-meter dives.
WVU will officially open the regular season next week when the Mountaineers host the West Virginia State Games on Oct. 6-7, at the WVU Natatorium. The two-day competition featuring collegiate swimming and diving programs from across the state of West Virginia will begin with diving events on Friday, Oct. 6 at 4 p.m. ET. Swimming events are set to begin at 6 p.m., while Saturday's events will begin at 10 a.m.
