WVU Hosts TCU to Open Big 12 Play

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Riding a nine-match win streak into league play, the West Virginia University volleyball team opens the 2017 Big 12 Conference season on Wednesday, Sept. 20, when TCU comes to the WVU Coliseum for a 6 p.m. match.
The Mountaineers will host a luau, with fans encouraged to wear their best Hawaiian-themed clothing. It also is a Dollar Night, with as all tickets and select concessions will be $1 each. Tickets are available by visiting WVUGAME.com, calling 1-800-WVU-GAME or at the Mountaineer Ticket Office, located at the Gold Gate of the WVU Coliseum. In addition, Mountaineer Maniac members will receive a free tank top.
"I like what we've done so far," coach Reed Sunahara said. "However, we've still got some work to do in the Big 12. Preseason is all about learning what you need to work on and making improvements, and I think we've done a good job on that. I'm looking forward to a great match in an exciting atmosphere, so I hope to see everyone there."
The Mountaineers (11-2, 0-0) and the Horned Frogs (8-3, 0-0) meet for the 11th time overall on Wednesday and the 10th time in league play since WVU joined the Big 12 in 2012. TCU owns an 8-3 lead in the series, though the two split the series in 2016 and 2014. West Virginia is 3-2 against TCU at home. The Mountaineers claimed a 3-2 win the last time the two met at the WVU Coliseum in September of 2016. However, the Frogs won a 3-2 match in Fort Worth in the most recent meeting between the programs, which took place in November of 2016. The two met once as nonconference opponents back in 2012, with TCU claiming the win in a neutral-site match.
WVU is currently on a nine-match win streak that dates back to Sept. 2. A 3-0 sweep of Tennessee in Minneapolis got things started for the Mountaineers. It marks the team's longest win streak since 2014 when it won 10 in a row.
The Mountaineers return to the WVU Coliseum for the first time since Aug. 26, when they hosted Delaware, UT-Martin and Penn State as part of the WVU Invitational. They posted a 2-1 record at the tournament, defeating the Blue Hens and the Skyhawks while falling to the Nittany Lions.
WVU is coming off a 3-0 performance at the Black Knights Invitational, hosted by Army in West Point, New York. The Mountaineers started things off with a 3-0 sweep of Akron before winning a five-set thriller over Army. The team wrapped things up with a 3-1 win over Providence. Sophomore Katelyn Evans earned MVP honors for leading the team, while sophomore setter Erin Slinde and freshman libero Alexa Hasting joined her on the all-tournament team.
For her efforts, Evans also was named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week. The Palmdale, California, native finished the week averaging 4.00 kills per set, ranking fifth in the Big 12. She hit .413 on 126 total attempts, ranking fourth in the league in hitting percentage. Evans had 11 kills in a sweep of in-state foe Marshall, leading WVU to the Golden Ball Trophy for the first time since 2015. Most impressively, Evans collected a career-best 24 kills to lead West Virginia in its 3-2 win at Army. She hit .385 with just four errors on 52 total attempts.
Wednesday marks the first of two home matches for WVU this week. The team will host No. 6 Texas in a 1 p.m. match at the WVU Coliseum on Saturday.
