MORGANTOWN, W.Va – Two members of the West Virginia University track & field team, senior Amy Cashin and junior Jillian Forsey, have been named to the 2017 Academic All-America Division I Women’s Track & Field/ Cross Country Second Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), on Friday.
“It’s exciting news for both Jill and Amy. This is a very prestigious award, one that we are very proud of,” Coach Sean Cleary said. “The demands placed upon student-athletes can sometimes become overwhelming but the resources provided to all student-athletes at WVU certainly help make such awards attainable. We have some wonderful students with very ambitious goals. Amy and Jill surely present themselves as powerful leaders.”
Cashin earned a 3.91 grade point average as a sports exercise psychology major with minors in psychology and athletic coaching.
In her senior year at WVU, Cashin earned the Order of Augusta Award, the most prestigious honor awarded by the University. She has also earned the Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year award for track & field and was named to the Academic All-Big 12 Track & Field and Cross Country First Team, in addition to USTFCCCA All-Academic honors.
Cashin also earned NCAA All-America Third Team honors for her performance in 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon. She set the school record in the same event at the NCAA East Regionals with a time of 10:01.19. At the Big 12 Championship, Cashin earned the silver medal in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and was named to the All-Conference First Team.
In the cross country season, she finished 22nd at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals to earn All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors.
Forsey, a native of Stephenville, Newfoundland, maintained a 3.75 grade point average while majoring in exercise physiology. This award marks the second time she has been honored as a CoSIDA Academic All-American, as she received CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Team honors in 2015.
She was named the Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year for Cross Country while nabbing First Team All-Conference honors. She was also named to the All-Mid-Atlantic Region team during the cross country season and earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors.
Forsey also had a successful season on the track, earning All-Big 12 First Team in the indoor season. In the cross country season, she earned a silver medal at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals to qualify for the NCAA Championship, where she finished 97th of 250 runners.
