Box Score KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The No. 5-ranked and second-seeded West Virginia University women's soccer team earned a 1-1 (2OT) draw against TCU tonight but was edged 5-3 in a penalty-kick shootout, halting the team's run in the 2017 Big 12 Soccer Championship at Swope Soccer Village in the semifinal round.
Trailing 1-0 after a TCU goal in the 52nd minute, the Mountaineers found their equalizer late, as senior defender
Amandine Pierre-Louis scored directly off a corner kick in the 77th minute to push the match to overtime.
After two scoreless 10-minute overtime periods, the match went to a penalty-kick shootout, TCU's second in as many games and the Mountaineers' first at the championship since 2014. The Horned Frogs made five straight and goalkeeper Katie Lund stopped the Mountaineers' third attempt to push third-seeded TCU to the 2017 Big 12 Soccer Championship final for the second consecutive year.
"Unfortunately, we couldn't find the game-winner in regulation. We drew TCU and had to go to PKs, and unfortunately, we didn't advance there," Mountaineer coach
Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "I was proud of our effort tonight. It's just unfortunate we couldn't find the back of the net.
"There are lessons learned with any kind of disappointment. I know a lot of players will learn and move forward from tonight."
Mountaineer senior
Carla Portillo made the first penalty kick for WVU, and senior forward
Michaela Abam followed with the second. Lund stopped junior defender
Vanessa Flores' attempt in the third round. Pierre-Louis connected in the fourth round, but TCU defender Ryan Williams answered at the top of the fifth round to advance the Horned Frogs.
The draw, WVU's second of the season, put the team's record at 15-3-2. TCU moved to 12-5-3.
The Mountaineers' scoring play was setup by a Horned Frog miscue. A TCU foul gave WVU a free kick just beyond midfield. Sophomore goalkeeper
Rylee Foster took the kick and sent it long. Lund let the ball go between her legs, giving the Mountaineers their eighth corner kick of the night. Pierre-Louis lined up for the kick and delivered a line drive which went through Lund's hands and settled into the netting near the far-right post.
"Both teams wanted to advance," Izzo-Brown added. "We saw a lot of character from our team after TCU went up 1-0."
Pierre-Louis' goal is her fifth of the season. She ranks No. 3 on the team with 11 points (5 G, 1 A).
TCU broke scoreless play in the 52nd minute. Midfielder Emma Heckendorn sent a corner kick toward the far-left post. Defender Ariana Owens immediately sent a shot in, and Foster batted it up and behind herself, where a waiting Allison Ganter headed it toward the left corner for her sixth goal of the season.
Both goalkeepers came up with one save each in the overtime periods. Foster made a great save at the post in the 96th minute, diving to the right and blocking away an attempt by Ganter. Less than three minutes later, junior defender
Easther Mayi Kith halted a second charge from Ganter, kicking the ball away from her feet just above the box to preserve the 1-1 score.
WVU had the momentum in the second overtime. Abam nearly connected on her second goal of the championship in the 105th minute, turning with the ball above the box, but her sailing shot went out of play near the left post.
With just 75 seconds remaining in overtime, junior defender
Bianca St. Georges sent a ball into the box. Junior midfielder
Grace Cutler headed it toward the net, but Lund was there for her fifth save.
The Mountaineers certainly had their chances in the first half, none greater than the looks they earned off their third corner kick in the 24th minute. The ball came to Abam wide of the penalty line, and her header was blocked away at the right post. She quickly recovered the ball and settled it just inside the box before firing a high shot. Lund got a hand on it and pushed it up into the crossbar, where it pinged back into play.
Four minutes later, a nice buildup by the Mountaineer attack led to a floating shot for Pierre-Louis from 21-yards out. Lund dove toward the near-left post and batted the ball back into the box.
Foster stood her ground in the first half, making three catching saves for WVU. She was most impressive in the 38th minute, tracking a shot by Tara Smith through traffic before catching it at the near-right post.
Following Pierre-Louis' equalizer, the Mountaineers had a chance in the 85th minute, as they worked the ball to freshman forward
Lauren Segalla at the top of the box, but her shot was stopped at the line by Lund.
WVU finished with a 16-12 edge in shots and an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks. Foster made five saves, and Lund stopped four.
Abam paced the field with six shots, while Ganter tallied a game-high three shots on-goal.
With tonight's result, WVU moves to 10-2-2 all-time at the Big 12 Soccer Championship and 2-1-1 against the Horned Frogs. The Mountaineers own a 7-1-2 all-time series edge over TCU.
The Mountaineers will learn their NCAA Tournament fate Monday afternoon, as the NCAA Tournament Selection Show will be streamed at NCAA.com beginning at 4:30 p.m.
