
Novice Opens Fall at Head of Occoquan

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University novice rowing team opened the fall season by securing a victory in the novice 8+ race and three top-10 finishes at the 33rd Annual Head of the Occoquan in Fairfax Station, Virginia, on Saturday.
"The team really came together today and generated a lot of excitement," assistant coach Tina Griffith said, "It was nice to see the student-athletes become more energized from the experience and the results, both in where we excelled and where we can develop."
The Mountaineers kicked off the regatta with three entries in the novice women's four race, where WVU saw all three boats finish in the top-10. WVU's 'A' boat, coxed by Olivia Martinelli and rowed by Madelynne Jones, Kileigh Lade, Jordan Wittmaack and Jelena Veskov, finished fourth with a time of 22:54.31, 19 seconds behind of the first-place finisher Pitt.
The 'C' boat, which was rowed by Abigail Patrick, Payton Rea, Claudia Fife, Madelene Blackwood and coxed by Margaret Heflin, finished one spot behind their teammates to take fifth with a time of 23:13.95.
The 'B' boat, rowed by Alexandria Young, Danielle Hofmann and Margaret Wagner and coxed by Morgan McCoy, finished two spots behind their teammates to finish seventh with a time of 23:18.46.
The Mountaineers ended the event with the novice women's 8+ race. The West Virginia boat, coxed by Martinelli and rowed by Jones, Lade, Heflin, Young, Wittmaack, Hofmann, Blackwood, and Patrick paced the field with a time of 21:04.96, three seconds ahead of the second-place finishers, Delaware.
The varsity and novice teams will be back in action on Nov. 11, when the Mountaineers race Duquesne in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to wrap up the fall season. The race marks the second meeting between the Dukes and Mountaineers this fall. The varsity team has been off since it competed against Robert Morris on Oct. 21, in Morgantown.
