MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team will continue its spring campaign with a pair of competitions at Lakewood Park in Norfolk, Virginia, this weekend.
The Mountaineers will compete at the Big 12 Duals on Saturday, April 7, followed by an exhibition race with Old Dominion on Sunday, April 8. Both races will be held at Lakewood Park in Norfolk, Virginia.
2018 Big 12 Duals Schedule
"This weekend we'll emphasize even more than usual the importance of being clearly focused and present in the moment," head coach Jimmy King said. "Our crews will need that focus in order to compete to the best of our abilities given the challenging set of circumstances we're facing."
On Saturday, the Mountaineers will begin the weekend with the Big 12 Duals. Saturday's race will be hosted by Big 12 Conference affiliate Old Dominion. Due to impending weather, the race is now slated to begin at 7 a.m. instead of the original 7:40 a.m. start time. WVU will start the day by facing off with the three-time defending Big 12 Champions Texas, before taking on Oklahoma in the second session.
The varsity eight boat will kick off the competition by launching against the Longhorns at 7 a.m., the second varsity eight, varsity four and second varsity four boats will launch every 20 minutes until third varsity eight crew finishes the first session with an 8:20 a.m. start time.
After a brief one-hour intermission, the Mountaineers will return to the water for the second session against Oklahoma with the varsity eight race, which is slated to begin at 9:30 a.m. The second varsity eight will begin at 9:50 a.m., with the varsity four, and second varsity four racing at 20-minute intervals. The third varsity eight boat will conclude the competition for the Mountaineers with a 10:50 a.m. race against the Sooners.
"We haven't been able to row since Tuesday due to high and fast water on the Mon' river. Although the river didn't officially flood during the past week, it surpassed our safety levels necessitating land workouts," King said. "Our situation probably won't be any better when we arrive in Norfolk Friday afternoon where strong and gusty winds are expected to prevent us from getting our usual pre-race day row on the race course."
Due to the changing weather conditions in the area, the schedule of events may change, so be sure to check HERE for the updated race schedule.
On Sunday, the Mountaineers are scheduled to take on Big 12 Conference affiliate Old Dominion in an exhibition race at Lakewood Park. The scrimmage will be re-evaluated after Saturday's Big 12 Duals after considering the weather forecast for Sunday.
