"Shooting back to back will be a challenge. The two matches this weekend will test their stamina," Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond said of his team.
The Mountaineers (4-0, 3-0 GARC) return to competition after a 4739-4647 win against No. 10 Ole Miss on Oct. 21. WVU shot an NCAA record for the second time this season during the match with its air rifle score of 2392. The Mountaineers shot two season-high scores with their aggregate score of 4739 and their smallbore score of 2347.
"It was a great result to have, but as a staff we are trying to keep them grounded and push them each week to improve," Hammond noted.
TCU is ranked No. 3 in the latest College Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) Poll.
Saturday pits the reigning NCAA National Champion against the national runner-up. WVU claimed its fifth straight title in 2017 with a championship-record 4723 mark, while the Horned Frogs placed second with a 4706 mark.
In their last match, the Horned Frogs defeated Memphis and Nebraska in Fort Worth, Texas, on Oct. 28 with an aggregate score of 4711.
The Mountaineers defeated Army West Point 4712-4657 last season, with a score of 2374-2354 in air rifle and 2338-2303 in smallbore.
The Black Knights' coach, Web Wright, attended WVU and was a member of the rifle team. Wright was a seven-time All-American and led the Mountaineers to three national titles in 1986, 1988 and 1989.
Army West Point will compete in the All-Academy President's Trophy Match on Saturday in Annapolis, Maryland.
