MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 2-ranked West Virginia University rifle team lines up against Ole Miss on Saturday, Oct. 21, at the WVU Rifle Range.
The shoulder-to-shoulder match will begin at 8 a.m. and continue into the afternoon. Fans are encouraged to stop by the range throughout the day to cheer for the Mountaineers (3-0, 2-0 GARC). The WVU Rifle Range is located in the Shell Building directly behind the WVU Coliseum. Admission is free.
The Rebels (3-0, 3-0 GARC) are WVU's second straight and third overall Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) opponent this season. The Mountaineers are 12-3 all-time against Ole Miss.
"I think we want to build off the first three matches of the season," Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond said. "It's been a short week since our match at Nebraska. Everyone needs to continue to work on the little things. We want to learn from last week, but each athlete will have different lessons. I think they each had a unique challenge last week.
"There's definitely a comfort factor now that we're back at home. I think they're each excited to get back into the range for another match. We want to continue to improve and get better."
The Mountaineers return to Morgantown following a successful trip to Nebraska on Oct. 14. WVU defeated the Huskers, 4716-4653, at the Nebraska Rifle Range in Lincoln, Nebraska, earning a 2336-2304 smallbore win and a 2380-2349 victory in air rifle. Sophomore Milica Babic earned her second straight air rifle win with a 597 mark, while redshirt-freshman David Koenders shot a career-high 588 for the smallbore victory.
Babic paces the Mountaineers in both disciplines with season averages of 596 air rifle and 584 smallbore.
The Rebels enter Saturday's match on the heels of a 4645-4633 win over Akron on Oct. 16, at the Patricia C. Lamar Readiness Center in Oxford, Mississippi. Ole Miss earned a 2356-2340 victory in air rifle, shooting the third-best mark in program history. The squad fell to the Zips in smallbore, 2293-2289.
Ole Miss is led by former WVU head coach Marsha Beasley. She is assisted by Jean-Pierre Lucas, a four-year member of the WVU rifle team and the 2016-17 team captain.
