No. 17 WVU and No. 20 Oklahoma Matchup Sunday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The No. 17/16-ranked West Virginia University women’s basketball team concludes its two-game homestand on Sunday, Jan. 8, with a 4 p.m. matchup against No. 20/24 Oklahoma at the WVU Coliseum.
Statistically, West Virginia remains No. 2 nationally with a 32.1 field goal percentage defense and 7.2 blocked shots per game. Sophomore Tynice Martin leads the team with 17.9 points per game. Lanay Montgomery is the team’s top rebounder, pulling in 9.5 boards per game. On Thursday, Montgomery was named one of 30 Senior CLASS Award candidates. Ray’s 6.3 assists per game leads the Big 12 Conference.
Sunday is Family Day. Four tickets and a $15 concession stand voucher can be purchased for $25. Fans can purchase tickets online at WVUGAME.com or by calling the Mountaineer Ticket Office at 1-800-WVU GAME.
The game is televised nationally on FS1 and the FOX Sports Go app (with a TV provider login), as Ron Thulin and Brenda VanLengen call the action.

West Virginia (13-2, 1-2) dropped its second consecutive game with a, 91-56, loss to No. 2 Baylor on Wednesday. Teana Muldrow’s 16 points and seven rebounds led the Mountaineers, while Chania Ray paced the team with a game-high eight assists.
The Mountaineers are looking to avoid their longest losing streak since 2015. Since Feb. 2015, WVU has bounced back with a victory on four different occasions after losing two consecutive games.
“We took a hit with injuries before the season and then we took a hit with injuries at the end of nonconference,” coach Mike Carey said. “Right now, we haven’t recovered from that. We haven’t played as well as we were playing. I don’t know what the reason is, but everything is off sync, our defense, our offense. Everything is off right now and we’ve got to get it back.”

West Virginia and Oklahoma meet for the 12th time on Sunday with WVU holding a 6-5 edge in the series. The Mountaineers are 4-0 in previous meetings in Morgantown, including a 63-55 win over No. 20 Oklahoma on Feb. 17, 2016.
The Sooners (12-3, 3-0) have won four consecutive games and six of its last seven. The Sooners collected an 85-80 win over K-State in overtime on Wednesday.
“They have a lot of players back,” Carey said. “After watching them on tape, they do a lot of the same things. They’ll play you man. Their guards are strong and they’ve got some size in the paint. They play very hard and they have a good team.”
OU is averaging 77.1 points per game and surrendering 65.5 points per contest to opponents. Oklahoma is shooting at a 42.2 percent clip (416-of-985) from the field and 33.7 percent (96-of-285) from 3-point range. The Sooners are 13th nationally with 6.3 blocked shots per game, anchored by 6-foot-9 freshman Nancy Mulkey’s 2.4 blocks per contest.
Peyton Little, Preseason All-Big 12 Honorable Mention, leads the Sooners with 13.4 points and 25 three-pointers. Maddie Manning is second on the team with 13.3 points per game and leads the conference with 2.7 steals per contest. Vionise Pierre-Louis is third in scoring with 9.3 points per game and leads the Sooners with 8.0 rebounds per game.
Following Sunday’s game, No. 17/16 WVU visits Texas Tech in a 7:30 p.m. ET/6:30 p.m. CT tilt on Wednesday, Jan. 11, in Lubbock, Texas. The game will be televised on FOX College Sports Atlantic.
