West Virginia (14-2, 2-2) snapped a two-game losing skid with an 83-73 victory over No. 20/24 Oklahoma on Sunday. Sophomore Tynice Martin registered her first career double-double with 18 points and a personal-best 11 rebounds, while Lanay Montgomery recorded her sixth double-double this season with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Alexis Brewer, returning from an injury that sidelined her for three games, netted 15 points in 31 minutes. Teana Muldrow (11) and Katrina Pardee (10) also reached double-digit scoring.

“It was nice to have Alexis Brewer back, which allowed us to sub at the guard position,” said coach Mike Carey, who will coach his 900th collegiate game on Wednesday. “It made a really big difference, especially when Chania (Ray) got into foul trouble. It was good to get a win and I thought we played harder. Hopefully, it will give us a lot of confidence.”

The Mountaineers are in the top-25 nationally in eight statistical categories, including No. 2 in field goal percentage defense (32.7%) and blocked shots per game (7.1). WVU is averaging 79.8 points per game and limiting opponents to 55.7 points per contest.

Montgomery leads the country with her 70.4 field goal percentage (81-of-115) and is fifth nationally with 3.5 blocks per game. Chania Ray continues to pace the Big 12 with 6.5 assists per contest, which is 19th in the NCAA. Martin is WVU’s leading scorer, averaging 17.9 points per game through 16 contests. Muldrow follows with 14.3 points contest and needs 160 more points to become the 33rd Mountaineer to reach the 1,000-point plateau.

West Virginia and Texas Tech square off for the 10th time on Wednesday. Since the series began in 2013, the two squads have alternated regular-season sweeps in the series. TTU swept the series in 2013 and 2015, while WVU won both regular-season matchups in 2014 and 2016. Last season, West Virginia picked up a 79-57 win in Morgantown (Jan. 9) and a 69-42 victory (Feb. 2) in Lubbock.

Texas Tech (10-5, 2-2) is coming off a 68-54 loss at Kansas State on Saturday. The Lady Raiders are 9-0 at the United Supermarkets Arena, which includes Big 12 victories over Oklahoma State (70-65) and Iowa State (75-66).

Through 15 games, TTU is averaging 72.5 points per game and surrendering 62.5 points per game. The Lady Raiders are No. 2 nationally in 3-point field goal percentage defense (23.4%), while 10th nationally with a 39.4 3-point field goal percentage. TTU is also 16th nationally in fewest fouls.

Recee’ Caldwell, a UCLA transfer, leads Texas Tech with 17.5 points per game, 45 three-pointers and 67 assists. Arella Guirantes and Jada Terry are also in double-figures with 12.2 and 11.7 points per game, respectively. Terry leads the Lady Raiders with 6.9 rebounds per game.

“They have a lot more players,” noted Carey. “They had some girls sitting out and Recee’ Caldwell was one of them. They have a nice 6-foot-4 freshman in Brittany Brewer. They are a lot deeper than they were and they have a lot more talent.”

The Mountaineers return home to host No. 16 Texas in a 4 p.m. matchup on Saturday, Jan. 14. Saturday’s contest is Superhero Day. All tickets are $1 courtesy of United Bank. Tickets can be purchased online at WVUGAME.com or by calling 1-800-WVU GAME.
