Burton and Australia Fall in Quarterfinals

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Dreams of capturing a medal in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games came to a halt on Tuesday for West Virginia University women’s basketball alum Natalie Burton and Australia, as the No. 2-ranked Opals fell, 73-71, to No. 14 Serbia at the Carioca Arena 1 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Australia held a 48-39 lead with five minutes remaining in the third quarter, but Serbia closed the deficit to 52-51 at the end of the period. Liz Cambage made a layup with two minutes remaining to put Australia up, 67-66. Serbia answered with a four-point spurt to take a three-point edge with a minute remaining. Cambage scored two more buckets to bring the Opals within one, but Serbia held serve to advance to play the winner of Spain and Turkey in the semifinals. Cambage paced Australia with 29 points and 11 rebounds. Jelena Milovanovi? paced Serbia with 17 points.
Burton, a 2012 WVU graduate, finished with two points and two rebounds in 14 minutes of play. In six games, Burton averaged 1.7 rebounds, 1.0 points and 0.8 assists per game.
The Perth, Australia, native returns to the play professionally in the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) for her hometown team the Perth Lynx. Perth opens the 2016-17 season on Friday, October 7 at Sydney.
