MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Eleven members of the West Virginia University rowing squad were named to the 2016 Academic All-Big 12 Rowing First Team, announced by the conference office on Wednesday.
Seniors Alison Coates (sport and exercise psychology), Susannah Hartlove (agribusiness management and rural development) and Elizabeth Kantak (graphic design), juniors Megan Brophy (criminology), Alisha Brownfield (psychology) Emily Deming (psychology) and Louisa Morgan (industrial engineering) and sophomores Aria Asselta (marketing), Elizabeth Hooper (business), Abbigail Rees (psychology) and Jacqueline Spiropoulos (sociology and anthropology) were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team.
“I’m certainly pleased and impressed with how well these young women manage their time to be successful student-athletes,” said coach Jimmy King. “I truly appreciate their commitment to academics and how well they consistently represent our team.”
A total of 158 student-athletes were placed on the 2016 Academic All-Big 12 Rowing Team. The 158-member field features 140 first-team honorees and 18 second-team nominees.
Among those nominated, Deming was one-of-10 student-athletes with a 4.0 grade point average (GPA). A native of Nokomis, Florida, Deming has earned first team honors two years in a row.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher, either cumulative or the two previous semesters, and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria expect percent of participate are also eligible.
The Mountaineers will race at the 2016 Big 12 Rowing Championship, set for May 14-15, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, on Melton Lake.
