MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Playing eight rounds of tournament golf in less than 10 days proved to be too much for the West Virginia University golf team as the Mountaineers stumbled in round two of the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate, taking 15th place on Sunday afternoon at the Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio.
Sitting in a tie for eighth place after shooting a 302 in the first round, WVU carded a team score of 316 in the second to finish with a 618 for 50 over par.
“”It was a rough day for us on the Scarlet Course,” coach Sean Covich said. “We just flat-out struggled today. It was not our best golf.”
No. 31 UNLV took home top team honors, finishing 18 over par with a score of 289-297=586. No. 37 UAB and No. 49 Michigan State tied for second, shooting 591 for 23 over par.
Tristan Nicholls tied for 44th place as WVU’s top finisher. He carded a two-round score of 73-79=152 for 10 over par. Fellow freshman and teammate Max Sear finished 12 over par and in 51st place, shooting 78-76=154.
Avery Schneider was a stroke back from Sear, registering a score of 72-83=155 for 13 over par. He finished tied for 59th place.
