WVU Completes Day One at Akron Invite

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team had multiple noteworthy performances to open competition on the first day of the 12th-annual Akron Invitational on Friday, Feb. 5, at Stile Athletics Field House in Akron, Ohio.
Day one of the Akron Invite treated the Mountaineers well as they posted two prominent victories, one in the pole vault blue division and one in the 4,000 distance medley relay gold division. WVU also took a top-three finish in the long jump blue division and added a top-four performance in the 5,000-meter run.
The first victory came from sophomore Madelin Gardner in the pole vault blue division. Gardner posted a season-best and indoor career-high mark of 3.96 meters. She improved .26 meters from her previous season-best mark of 3.70 meters, while moving up to the No. 3 spot on WVU’s all-time indoor performance list. Sophomore Sara Finfrock also competed in the event and tied for sixth with a mark of 3.36 meters.
West Virginia earned its second win of the night in the 4,000 distance medley relay thanks to sophomore Maggie Drazba, sophomore Bria Welker, senior Kelly Williams and junior Brianna Kerekes. The victorious team crossed the finish line in 11:59.02.
Sophomore Meghan Jean-Baptiste posted a third-place finish in the women’s long jump blue division, recording a personal-best mark of 5.47 meters. She improved .33 meters from her previous career-best mark.
Sophomore Allie Diehl notched a fourth-place finish in the 5,000 meter run gold division with a time of 18:23.65. She improved 4.04 seconds from her previous career-best time in the event.
West Virginia will return to Stile Athletics Field House to compete in the final day of the Akron Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 6. Events will begin at 10 a.m.
