December 02, 2016 02:02 PM | Track & Field
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team will host the Marty Pushkin Classic on Saturday, Dec. 3 at the WVU Shell Building to open the 2016-17 indoor season.
The Mountaineers will host six teams inside the Shell Building, Alderson Broaddus, Waynesburg University, Washington and Jefferson, Davis & Elkins, Frostburg and the WVU Running Club. Field events will begin at 9:00 a.m. followed by running events at 9:30 a.m.
“Racing at home for the first meet is always a plus,” coach Sean Cleary said. “The laid back atmosphere allows our track kids to ease into what will be a long and exciting year. We will have a good opportunity to see firsthand how the fall condition transfers into results.”
Admission is free for all fans. Parking is available in the lots surrounding the WVU Coliseum with the exception of the Black RV lot. Fans can follow @WVUTrackField on Twitter for updates and additional information.
This is the first of two home meets that West Virginia will host. Last year, the Mountaineers canceled the meet due to inclement weather. The last time it was held was in the 2014-15 season. The second home meet is the WVU Open on Jan. 16.
During the 2015-16 indoor track season, WVU fished ninth at the Big 12 Championship while, seven Mountaineers earned All-Big 12 honors for finishing in the top-eight of the final events.
Eight newcomers join the 2016-17 WVU track and field squad, while 26 upperclassmen return.
Looking ahead, the Mountaineers will host their second meet of the season in the WVU Open, on Jan. 16 at the WVU Shell Building.
