WVU Boasts Nation’s Top FG Defense

With one-third of the regular season in the books, the No. 14-ranked West Virginia University women’s basketball team has been impressive.

West Virginia is just one of 11 teams that remains undefeated in NCAA Division I. The Mountaineers (10-0) join Big 12 member Oklahoma State (8-0) as the league’s only two unbeaten teams left. The other nine undefeated programs are Buffalo (8-0), California (8-0), Connecticut (9-0), Colorado (9-0), Maryland (11-0), Mississippi State (10-0), South Florida (9-0), Utah (9-0) and Virginia Tech (10-0).

West Virginia ranks fifth in scoring margin (+30.5), 10th in rebounding margin (+12.6) and 11th in 3-point defense (24.2%).

Montgomery Closing in on No. 2
Senior center Lanay Montgomery needs just six more blocks to surpass former teammate Asya Bussie for No. 2 on WVU’s all-time blocks list. Montgomery has compiled 265 blocks in 107 games played. Her block total ranks fifth all-time in the Big 12 Conference.

What A Streak
West Virginia has won a school-record 31 consecutive games against nonconference opponents at the WVU Coliseum dating back to the 2013-14 season. Dating back to last season, WVU’s 12-game win streak at the Coliseum is sixth all-time, while this year’s 10-game win streak is currently 10th.

Professional Mountaineers Excelling
West Virginia has six Mountaineers that are competing professionally overseas for the 2016-17 season.

Natalie Burton (2012) is averaging 3.6 points and 3.4 rebounds in 13 games for the Perth Lynx of the Australian Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL). The Lynx are third in the WNBL ladder with an 8-5 record.
Korinne Campbell, a 2011 graduate, is averaging 14.5 points and 11.3 rebounds for PAOK Thessalonikis in the Greek Women’s Basketball League. Campbell’s rebound average ranks fourth in the league.
After a successful rookie WNBA season with the Atlanta Dream, Bria Holmes (2016) has played strong for Bnot Maccabi Ramat Gan in the Israeli Premier League. Holmes ranks fifth in the league with 18.6 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. Ramat Gan is tied for first in the league with Bnot Hertzeliya with a 4-1 record.
Crystal Leary, a 2015 WVU graduate, was averaging a double-double of 11.7 points and 10.0 rebounds for the Wolfenbuettel Wolfback in Germany’s 2 Bundesliga before suffering a torn ACL a few weeks ago.
Two-time Olympian Yelena Leuchanka (2006) is continuing another successful professional year with the Guangdong Dolphins in the Women’s Chinese Basketball Association. Leuchanka is averaging 18.1 points and 13.4 rebounds this season. Her rebound total is fourth in the 12-team WBCA.
Olayinka Sanni helped the Nigerian First Bank team to a bronze medal finish in the 2016 FIBA Africa Champions Cup on Dec. 4. Sanni scored nine points in First Bank’s 62-54 win over Primerio D’Agosto. The 2008 WVU graduate averaged 4.6 points in five games played.
