MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University wrestling team will make its 2016-17 debut on Sunday at the WVU Coliseum when it hosts Campbell, Ohio and No. 23 Pitt at the Mountaineer Quad. The first duals are scheduled to start at 10 a.m., with WVU taking on Campbell at 10 a.m. before squaring off with Ohio at 2 p.m.
The Mountaineers will not face the Panthers at the event. The two will meet in December in Pittsburgh.
“We are excited to have several new starters and seasoned veterans start off the season in front of our home crowd at our second annual Mountaineer Quad,” said coach Sammie Henson, who enters his third season. “We look to have these men step up this year and bring the blue collar brand of wrestling to our fans, friends and family.”
Tickets are available for purchase at WVUGAME.com, by calling 1-800-WVU GAME or by visiting the Mountaineer Ticket Office inside the WVU Coliseum. The cost is $5 for adults, $3 for youth and senior citizens and $2 for groups of 10 or more. Admission is free for all students with a valid WVU student I.D. Veterans and active military members will gain free admission with a valid military I.D. The Mountaineers will sign autographs after the conclusion of the final dual.
WVU hosted the first Mountaineer Quad in 2015, going 3-0 against Drexel, Campbell and Arizona State.
The Mountaineers downed the Camels, 26-14, last season in the first-ever meeting between the two teams. Tony DeAngelo earned a third-period pin at 141 pounds, while Dylan Cottrell added a tech. fall at 157. Parker VonEgidy and Jacob A. Smith recorded major decisions at 174 and 197, respectively.
Sunday will mark the 54th meeting between West Virginia and Ohio, with the Mountaineers boasting a 35-17-1 lead in the series. The two first squared off in 1922, and last met in 2015. Trailing 16-8 with three bouts remaining, WVU won three straight with back-to-back major decisions by Zeke Moisey (125) and Cory Stainbrook (133) to take a 19-16 win at the WVU Coliseum.
The Mountaineers have made several changes to the lineup, as Moisey, the 2015 NCAA runner-up at 125 pounds will redshirt the season along with Keegan Moore (133), Zachary Moore (149) and several freshman. Cottrell will move from 157 pounds to 165 pounds, while VonEgidy bumps from 174 to 184 pounds.
Named a team captain along with Stainbrook and DeAngelo, Cottrell enters the season ranked No. 15 at his new weight according to FloWrestling and InterMat. Fellow West Virginia native Smith ranks at No. 8/9/10.
