MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University wrestling team sets off on its first road trip of the year this weekend, heading to Troy, New York, to compete in the 2016 Journeymen ASICS Collegiate Classic at Hudson Valley Community College on Sunday.
The 2016 season marks the third straight year the Mountaineers have participated in the event, though the format has moved from dual matches to an individual tournament with round-robin brackets. Wrestlers will be divided into pools at each weight class, with the winner of each pool advancing. The first round will start at 10 a.m.
Live results are provided on Tournaflex while FloWrestling will offer live video for subscribers.
“The Journeymen Classic format is unique with a round-robin system that allows our wrestlers opportunities to wrestle four quality matches,” said WVU coach Sammie Henson. “It is important for us to capitalize as a team on our aggressiveness and put points on the board.”
Fourteen Mountaineers will compete this weekend.

WVU opened the 2016-17 season last weekend, welcoming Campbell and Ohio to the WVU Coliseum on Sunday as part of the Mountaineer Quad.
With Zachary Moore taking a redshirt season after starting at 149 last year, Christian Monserrat has stepped into the lineup and gotten off to a strong start. The Methuen, Massachusetts, native went 2-0 to start the season. More impressively, he grabbed recorded a first-period pin in his first career dual match against Campbell, and went on to add a major decision against Ohio. Monserrat led WVU with 10 team points in the Mountaineers' opening weekend.
After spending the 2015-16 season nationally ranked at 157, Dylan Cottrell made his debut at 165 pounds last season. The senior captain went 2-0, winning a 5-2 decision over Campbell's Quentin Perez in his first match at his new weight. Cottrell then defeated Ohio's No. 17/19 Austin Reese, who made the round of eight at 2016 NCAAs, by major decision.
West Virginia will travel to Lincoln, Nebraska, next week to take on No. 7 Nebraska on Friday.
