MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women’s basketball freshman guard Tynice Martin has been named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week.
Martin averaged 15.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists as the Mountaineers remained perfect in conference play with wins over Kansas State and Texas Tech last week.
An Atlanta native, she is the first WVU player to earn Big 12 Player of the Week accolades since Bria Holmes was named Freshman of the Week in December 2012.
At Kansas State on Jan. 6, Martin had a career-high 16 points was 4-of-5 from beyond the three-point line. She followed it up with 15 points and a team-high five assists against Texas Tech on Jan. 9. Martin also had five rebounds, recorded two steals and blocked a shot in 27 minutes of action against the Lady Raiders.
In the Mountaineers’ two games this week, Martin hit 47.8 percent of her field goal attempts and converted all four attempts from the free throw line. Martin leads the WVU freshmen with 8.8 points and 3.2 rebounds per game in 17 contests this season.
West Virginia returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 12, in an 8 p.m. ET/7p.m. CT matchup at No. 6/7-ranked Baylor.
