LONDON – Day one is in the books for the West Virginia University women’s basketball team. The Mountaineers arrived in London on Thursday and took in a quick tour of the city.
WVU starts prepping for its first of four games on Friday with practice in Central London. Below are a few highlights from the team’s first day in Europe.
Media Wrap and on the Way to Washington, D.C.
The Mountaineers practiced early on Wednesday in Morgantown before heading east to Washington, D.C. for a direct flight to London. Coach Mike Carey, Bria Holmes, Lanay Montgomery and Katrina Pardee all answered questions from the media about what they expect to get out of the experience.
The team arrived early to Washington’s Dulles Airport and relaxed before a nearly seven hour flight to London.
Arrival in London
The Mountaineers arrived around 10 a.m. BST and it took another hour or so to complete customs. Instead of going directly to the hotel, the team took a bus ride to Central London – the heart and soul of the city.
On a normal day, the ride to Central London would have been shorter, but there was more traffic on the roads on Thursday. Workers for the London Underground, also known as the Tube, were on strike closing the subway system and forcing many commuters to drive.
Leicester Square
The first visit for the Mountaineers was to historic Leicester Square. The team split up for lunch. Some partook in the local favorite fish and chips, while others elected to stick with American food. The team explored the numerous shops and watched a pair of street performers. Additionally, the team took a leisurely stroll through Trafalgar Square. They will visit the area more in depth later this weekend.
Team Dinner
With the first night near an end, the Mountaineers experienced some British fare with a French twist at Bradley’s Restaurant. A variety of dishes were offered including chicken, hake and lamb. Excellent desserts of crème brûlée and strawberry tart were served to close out a fantastic first day. The entire Mountaineer group sang Happy Birthday to former standout and graduate assistant Liz Repella before leaving.
