MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 4 West Virginia University cross country team took first place this afternoon at the Paul Short Invitational on the campus of Lehigh, in Bethlehem, Pa.
In one of the most prestigious events in the country, the Mountaineers took the top spot out of 75 teams, with 105 team points. Guelph finished in second (127), followed by Indiana (143), North Carolina State (153) and Cornell (183).
"For as well as we ran today, I am most excited because a few of the girls that have been training at a high level didn't have the best first half, but they came back in the second half to have a great race," coach Sean Cleary says. "That is the epitome of our sport, you fight to do your best and finish at the top. Overall, it was a terrific day for our team."
Junior Jessica O'Connell led the Mountaineers, finishing in 10th place with a time of 20:24. Redshirt freshman Sarah-Anne Brault followed in 13th (20:35), while juniors Kate Harrison and Kaylyn Christopher finished 20th (20:56) and 21st (20:56), respectively.
Also racing well was redshirt junior Maria Dalzot, who finished in 60th with a time of 21:37, and redshirt sophomore Stephanie Caruso, who crossed the line in 74th, respectively (21:44).
Neely Spence from Shippensburg took first place with a time of 19.58.
The Mountaineers continue racing on Oct. 16, as they travel to University Park, Pa., to compete at the Penn State National Invitational for their last regular season race.
