Mountaineers Continue Season at John McNichols Invitational

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University cross country team continues its 2026 season Friday, Sept. 18, at the John McNichols Invitational in Terre Haute, Indiana.

The Mountaineers will compete in the women's 6k open race, which is scheduled to begin at 9:40 a.m.

West Virginia opened the season with a team victory at the RMU Invitational on Sept. 11, scoring 36 points. Sheila Chepkirui won the individual race in her collegiate debut, while Chelsea Chepkemboi and Alyssa Sauro also made their debut and finished third and fifth, respectively.

WVU enters the meet ranked No. 7 nationally in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association preseason poll and No. 1 in the Mid-Atlantic Region.

Following the John McNichols Invitational, West Virginia will split its squad for two meets on Oct. 9-10. A group will travel to Madison, Wis., for the Nuttycombe Invitational on Oct. 9, while another group will compete at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational in Clinton, Pa., on Oct. 10.
