Mountaineers Head to North Texas for UNT Invitational

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team (4-3, 0-0 Big 12) travels to the UNT Volleyball Center in Denton, Texas, on Sept. 17-19 for the UNT Invitational, featuring East Texas A&M (6-3, 0-0 Southland), North Texas (5-3, 0-0 American) and Tarleton State (3-6, 0-0 United).
The Mountaineers will face all three teams for the first time in program history.
WVU opens the invitational against East Texas A&M on Thursday, Sept. 17, at 5 p.m. ET. West Virginia and North Texas are slated for an 8 p.m. ET first serve on Friday, Sept. 18, before the Mountaineers close out the weekend against Tarleton State on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 11 a.m. ET.
The Mountaineers enter the invitational following a 1-2 week, earning a 3-1 victory over VCU before falling to Lehigh and Toledo in five sets.
West Virginia currently leads the Big 12 in assists and ranks second in the conference in team kills. Senior outside hitter Nina Horning leads the Mountaineers with 115 kills this season. Senior opposite Trinity Sheridan has been efficient offensively, hitting .295 with 62 kills on 146 attempts. Senior setter Alexis Finnvold orchestrates the WVU offense with 235 assists.
Defensively, WVU ranks No. 3 in the Big 12 in total blocks and digs. Freshman defensive specialist/libero Reagan Turk leads the team with 43 digs, while freshman middle blocker Mirjam Karoliine Kask and senior middle blocker Maddy McGath share the team lead with 27 blocks apiece.
East Texas A&M enters the matchup following a 1-2 weekend, falling to IU Indy, 3-1, and UTSA in straight sets before capturing a five-set victory over Gonzaga.
The Lions' attack is led by senior outside hitter Ariana Brown, who has totaled 118 kills while hitting .266 this season. Senior outside hitter Gracie Campbell leads the team with a .305 hitting percentage, recording 40 kills on 105 attempts. Senior setter Haley Mullaney directs the offense with a team-high 224 assists.
Defensively, freshman middle blocker Sabine Wenzel leads the Lions with 37 blocks, while sophomore defensive specialist/libero Jade Washington paces the team with 167 digs.
The Lions are coached by Joe Morales, who is in his fourth season as a head coach and owns a 34-64 career record.

North Texas enters the invitational following a 2-1 week, facing UT Arlington, Stephen F. Austin and Texas State. The Mean Green fell to UT Arlington, 3-1, before earning four-set victories over SFA and Texas State.
Senior outside hitter Jahniya Jackson leads the North Texas attack with 90 kills this season. Junior middle blocker Addison Achilles is hitting .333 with 53 kills on 114 attempts.
Sophomore setter Sidney Soria and freshman setter Olivia Branum split setting duties for the Mean Green, recording 169 and 132 assists, respectively.
Achilles and fifth-year middle blocker Loredana Fouonji share the team lead with 31 blocks apiece, while sophomore libero Alessandra Romo paces the defense with 119 digs.
North Texas is led by Dave Fleming, who is in his second season with the program and 22nd season overall as a head coach. Since joining the Mean Green, Fleming has led the team to a 26-12 record and owns a 416-196 career record.
