
West Virginia Caps Regular Season with Double Meet Weekend

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team is set for its final weekend of the regular season with a pair of meets on the road, beginning at No. 21 NC State on Friday, March 13. Competition inside the James T. Valvano Arena at William Neal Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, N.C., is set for 6 p.m. ET. The weekend then concludes in a tri meet at Pitt on Sunday, March 15. Illinois State will join the Mountaineers at the meet, which is scheduled for 2 p.m., at Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh, Pa.
The NC State meet will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra, with Rachel Garland and Sydney Snead on the call. The Pitt tri meet on Sunday also can be found on ACCNX, while live stats for both meets are available at WVUsports.com.
WVU will meet two of three opponents for the second time this season between its two meets this weekend. The Mountaineers and NC State met in a quad meet at Towson on March 1, where the Wolfpack finished in first with a 197.15 and WVU placed second with a 196.35. West Virginia holds a 29-15 record over NC State in the all-time series.
In the tri meet, WVU will compete against the Panthers for the second time this season, after earning a 195.875-194.775 win in Morgantown on Jan. 30. West Virginia is 71-21-2 all-time against its rival Pitt. The Mountaineers are set to face Illinois State for just the second time in program history and the first time since 2009 on Sunday. WVU tallied a 193.7-190.7 win over ISU in the two teams' first meeting. Of note, WVU alum Kendra Combs is an assistant coach for Illinois State.
In this week's Road to Nationals rankings, West Virginia's vault lineup currently ranks No. 31 nationally with a 48.928 National Qualifying Score. The vault lineup owns a season high of 49.125, which it earned at Towson on March 1. Elsewhere, WVU ranks No. 47 overall, No. 47 on bars, No. 55 on beam and No. 46 on floor exercise. Individually, freshman Kayla Smith ranks No. 6 in the Big 12 Conference and the southeast region with a 38.985 NQS on all-around this year.
Sophomore Sophia Rice ranks No. 9 in the Big 12 Conference and No. 17 in the southeast region with a 9.83 NQS on vault. She is followed in the conference rankings by Kayla Smith at No. 16 (9.805 NQS) on vault, while sophomore Karleigh DiCello ranks No. 21 (9.8 NQS) and classmate Emerson Smith is No. 23 (9.795 NQS). Junior Amber Lowe is No. 15 in the conference and No. 24 in the region on bars with a 9.82 NQS. She also sits at No. 14 in the Big 12 on beam (9.815 NQS). On floor, Emerson Smith ranks No. 11 in the league and No. 23 regionally with a 9.855 NQS. Kayla Smith comes in at No. 21 in the conference with a 9.805 NQS. Junior Jurnee Lane rounds out the floor group at No. 23 (9.79 NQS) in the Big 12.
Last time out, West Virginia scored a 195.3 to finish in third place in a tri meet against No. 12 Utah and No. 24 BYU inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, on March 7. The host Utes took first place with a 197.65, while BYU was second with a 196.55. WVU registered scores of 48.95 on vault, 48.7 on uneven bars, 48.775 on balance beam and 48.875 on floor exercise. On all-around, Kayla Smith scored a 38.975 to finish in fourth place in the event standings. Lowe earned an impressive tie for first place on beam after scoring a 9.875, just shy of her career high.
