MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia men's and women's swimming and diving teams finished competition at the Florida State University Invitational on Saturday in Tallahassee, Florida.
Both squads placed third as Florida State won the invitational.
The Mountaineers had strong showings in the pool with three second-place finishes. Junior
Maddie Smutny got things going early with a second-place finish in the women's 500-yard freestyle (4:54.93). Freshman
Jake Salcedo followed Smutny's performance with another second-place finish in the 500-yard free (4:30.02).
Senior
Gabriela Martin was the highlight of the day as she placed second and third in two individual events. Martin posted a second-place finish in the women's 200-yard individual medley (2:04.83) and a third-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (50.60).
Kentucky transfer, sophomore
Szymon Mieczkowski, had a third-place finish in the men's 200-yard backstroke (1:47.28) in his Mountaineer debut.
In the women's 100-yard medley relay, West Virginia finished third with a final time of 46.36.
Following Friday's session, it was reported that sophomore
David Hatt won the men's 1-meter diving competition. Due to a recording error, that is incorrect. Hatt placed second with 258.85 total points.
