MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – In the season opener at the Florida State University Invitational for the West Virginia University men's and women's swimming and diving teams, sophomore MJ Gilligan posted the seventh fastest time in program history in the women's 400-yard individual medley.
 
West Virginia had a good showing in Tallahassee, Florida, with Gilligan leading the way as she touched the wall at 4:22.05 in the 400 IM. Senior Gabriela Martin began her final season for the Mountaineers in impressive fashion as she recorded two top-three finishes.
 
Martin placed third in the women's 200-yard freestyle (1:48.84) and third in the 100-yard individual medley (58.35). Also, for the women's team, redshirt senior Natasha Whittall placed third in the 100-yard backstroke (54.85).
 
On the men's side, freshman Caden Oprandy led the way with a third-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:00.53). The Mountaineers ended the night in the pool with a second-place finish in the women's 100-yard freestyle relay (42.32).
 
In the diving well, Auburn transfer, sophomore David Hatt, turned heads in his Mountaineer debut as he won the men's 1-meter (258.85). For the women's team, senior Abigail Sullivan led the way with a sixth-place finish on the 3-meter (226.20).
 
West Virginia competes on the second and final day of the invite on Saturday at 10 a.m. ET.
