– The West Virginia University golf team shot a school record 22-under-par for a 266, also a program best, while sophomore
Ryan Leach tied a school-best mark at -9 in the first round on the first day of the fall season at the Island Resort Collegiate at Sage Run Golf Club in Bark River, Michigan.

Jack Michael's score was adjusted after round one and the Mountaineers posted a 266 (-22), not 267 (-21).
Leach stands in first place in the tournament after two rounds at -16 after posting rounds of -9 (63) and -7 (65) and is five shots ahead of three golfers in the field. Leach's -9 ties the school record for the lowest round in school history in relation to par. Mark Goetz shot -9 in the final round of the 2021 Mountaineer Invitational. Leach's 63 was one stroke shy of Logan Perkins' 62 at the Florida Gators Invitational in 2020. Perkins shot a school-record 62 on a par-70 course.
The Mountaineers are in first place in the team standings at -40 (266-270), five shots ahead of Purdue in the 12-team field. In the first round, WVU shot a school record -22, besting the previous mark of -17, set at the Dorado Beach Collegiate (2023-24) and Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate (2021-22).
WVU's 266 score in round one bested the school records of 271 set at the Dorado Beach Collegiate (2023-24), Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate (2021-22) and the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic (2018-19).
Leach and three of his Mountaineer teammates are in the Top 10 of the individual standings. Sophomore
Nick Turowski is in sixth place at -9 after posting rounds of -6 (66) and -3 (69). Senior
Kaleb Wilson is in seventh place at -8 after recording rounds of -3 (69) and -5 (67). Michael, playing in his first collegiate event, shot -4 (68) and -3 (69) and is in ninth place at -7. Junior
Harrison Thompson recorded rounds of 74 and 72. Senior
Westy McCabe is playing as an individual and shot rounds of -2 (70) and -2 (70), standing in 20
th place.
In total today, West Virginia recorded 10 eagles and 50 birdies among all six golfers.
