
Volleyball Opens Season at Quest for the Crown

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team begins the 2025 campaign as it travels to Quest for the Crown on Aug. 29th- 30th in Norfolk, Virginia.
The Mountaineers will face off against Towson on Thursday, Aug. 29, at 10 a.m. ET, followed by a matchup with Old Dominion at 7 p.m. West Virginia concludes the weekend against Fairfield on Saturday, Aug. 30, at 1 p.m. All matches will be held inside the ODU Volleyball Center.
Friday night's match versus Old Dominion will be the only game streamed throughout the weekend on ESPN+. All three matches will have live stats available at WVUsports.com.
Returning for her second season at the helm of the Mountaineers, Jen Greeny looks to improve upon a 8-21 record. West Virginia returns eight student athletes from the 2024 season, with the addition of five transfers and three freshmen.
The Mountaineers return starters in redshirt senior outside hitter Cassidy Tanton, redshirt junior setter Alexis Finnvold, senior middle blocker Laila Ibrahim, and junior middle blocker Maddy McGath. WVU added veteran experience in the portal with the additions of defensive specialist/libero LonDynn Betts, and redshirt junior opposite Trinity Sheridan.
During the 2024 season, Tanton led the Mountaineers with 310 kills on a .208 clip while Finnvold collected 586 assists and 8.62 assists per set to lead the squad.
Friday's match marks the eighth meeting between West Virginia and Towson. The Mountaineers and the Tigers have each won four matches in the series with this being the first time meeting since 2011. Friday evening the Mountaineers will face off against Old Dominion for the fourth time. West Virginia leads the all-time series, 3-1, dating back to 2020. West Virginia concludes the weekend against Fairfield for the team's third meeting, with the all-time series being tied at 1-1.
