MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – WVU's Blue team won the annual intrasquad Gold and Blue Regatta held both on the erg deck in the Athletics Performance Center and on the Monongahela River, in Morgantown, West Virginia, by a score of 125-77.
With this win, the Blue team won its second consecutive Gold and Blue Regatta after breaking the Gold team's two-year winning streak in 2024.
Not only did the regatta include racing on the water, but the teams also did a 2k on the erg before heading to the boathouse. The results of their 2k factored into the final results in equal measure to those on the water. The on-water events included an open 4+ race followed by the first- and second-year's 8+ race, an open 2x race and an open 8+ race. Due to wind, the open 2x race was canceled, but the 4's and 8's battled it out.
"The morning started off really well with a lot of personal bests on their 2k erg test," associate head coach
Tina Griffith said. "To earn points for the regatta, we grouped athletes together and those on the Gold team faced off with those on the Blue team for both raw score and average score points within that grouping. Even though the Blue team came away with a majority of the points, there was some really close racing within those groups and some excellent individual performances."
Blue started the day with a win on the erg deck. The team was led and coached by senior
Violet Hewett, who had the fastest 2k time of the morning, giving it a 50-point lead heading into the water events. The Gold team, coached by senior
Grace Cronen, would go on to win two out of three water events, earning wins in the open 4+ and open 8+, but Blue stopped the Gold comeback by winning the open 8+ to seal the victory.
"On the water we had great weather and a significant number of fans, including alumni, family, friends, administrators and support staff," Griffith said. "It was really nice for the team to have such a robust and loud cheering section and to have the Mountaineer start us off with the musket. We really appreciate everyone who took the time to come down and support the athletes."
The Mountaineer rowing team returns to action this Saturday, April 26, at the Ford Lake Cup at Ford Lake Park in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
