
West Virginia Falls Short on Senior Night

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team dropped its home finale, falling 195.3-194.925 to Big 12 Conference newcomer No. 20 Arizona inside the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown on Friday night.
The Mountaineers collected totals of 48.675 on vault, 48.825 on the uneven bars, 48.3 on balance beam and 49.125 on floor exercise. Following the meet, the squad celebrated its four senior members – Brooke Alban, Anna Leigh, Trinity Macy and Sierra Muns.
Competing in Olympic order for the final time this year, WVU opened strong on vault, as freshman Karleigh DiCello's 9.825 led the way. Alban followed with a 9.75, while freshmen Emerson Smith and Taylor Tuohy scored a 9.725 and 9.7, respectively. The scoring was capped by a 9.675 from freshman Sophia Rice.
The momentum picked up on bars, with sophomore Amber Lowe leading the lineup with a career-high tying and season-best 9.875. The score marked the highest for any Mountaineer on the event this season. Alban matched her season high with a 9.8, and Leigh secured a 9.75. Three scores of 9.7 from Macy and sophomores Julia Brown and Jayden McDonnell wrapped up the second rotation.
West Virginia faltered a bit on beam, but Brown hit an impressive 9.825 to lead the team on the event. Lowe scored a 9.775, followed by a 9.725 for DiCello. After a few balance checks, Leigh secured a 9.575, while a 9.4 from freshman Eden Webster was counted following a fall before her in the lineup. Of note, Webster's performance marked her collegiate debut for WVU.
Closing out the meet and the home slate on floor, Leigh and freshman Riley Maness shined on the event with a pair of 9.9's. The score marked a new career high for Maness, while it was Leigh's fourth 9.9+ score on floor this season. Lowe, Tuohy and Smith collected a trio of 9.775's to help the lineup reach its third 49.0+ event score this season.
In the final event standings, DiCello tied for first place on vault. Lowe earned the title on bars, while Alban tied for second. Brown finished in third place on beam, and Leigh and Maness shared the win on floor.
West Virginia now prepares for a long stretch on the road to complete the regular season, beginning with its first quad meet of the year at Towson with George Washington and Penn on Tuesday, March 4. Competition inside TU Arena in Towson, Maryland, is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.
