TEMPE, Ariz. –
The West Virginia University gymnastics team recorded a season-high 195.825 in a dual meet at No. 25 Arizona State inside the Desert Financial Arena in Tempe, Arizona, on Friday night.
The Mountaineers' new season-high score bested their previous season high by nearly four-tenths, as the squad recorded its third 195.0+ score of the season and second in a row on the road. WVU reached the new season-high total with season-best team scores on vault and uneven bars, scoring a 48.95 on vault and a 49.05 on bars. The score was West Virginia's first 49.0+ score on bars this year. The squad also added totals of 48.875 on balance beam and 48.95 on floor exercise.
Opening up on bars, sophomore
Amber Lowe led the way with a season-best 9.85, while fifth-year senior
Trinity Macy followed with a season-high matching 9.825. A pair of 9.8's for seniors
Brooke Alban and
Anna Leigh were next, while sophomore
Jayden McDonnell's season-high 9.775 wrapped up an impressive opening rotation for the Mountaineers.
Moving to vault, freshman
Karleigh DiCello paced the lineup with a career-high matching 9.85, while Alban and freshman
Emerson Smith recorded matching 9.8's. The total was a season high for Alban. Freshman
Sophia Rice added a 9.775, before junior
Carlee Nelson and freshman
Taylor Tuohy secured two 9.725's to help the lineup reach a season high on the event.
In the third rotation on floor, Smith recorded a career-high matching 9.85, followed by two 9.8's for Lowe and freshman
Riley Maness. Leigh and Macy rounded out the scoring with a pair of 9.75's.
Wrapping up the meet on beam, Lowe reached a new career-best score, earning a 9.85 to lead the lineup. A trio of 9.775's followed from Leigh and sophomores
Julia Brown and
Kaylei Adams were next, while DiCello's 9.7 finished out the meet for the Mountaineers.
In the final event standings, DiCello tied for second on vault, and Lowe earned her second event win of the season in a tie for first on beam.
Up next, West Virginia returns to Morgantown to wrap up the home and Big 12 Conference portion of its regular-season schedule, welcoming league newcomer Arizona to the WVU Coliseum on Friday, Jan. 28. It's Senior Night, and competition is slated for 7 p.m. ET. The meet also will be the first-ever Coal Rush meet, with all fans encouraged to wear black, as well as the annual Women's Empowerment Meet.
